Artist StatementMy photography series addresses the outer layer of our identity and the labels we attach to it in an effort to convey the opposite message, that our identity is more then just some labels we attach to ourselves and also as an experiment to see how people define themselves and act when put on the spot. The reason I have selected this subject for my work is I am interested in people and their identity and what truly defines a person as well as what does not. The motivation of this project is to create some awareness on who we really are and what defines us and perhaps taking a moment to reflect on our identity will influence some positive changes on who you really want to be.
Some inspiration for this project came from the book “A new earth” by Eckhart Tolle. In this book, some of the key elements that Tolle was trying to address was we constantly define things, people and ourselves with labels which creates a filter over who we really are and how we view the world. The process of this project was find volunteers of different ages and ethnicities and ask them to write down one to ten labels / words that they associate themselves with and avoid giving them any suggestions since I didn’t want to affect the outcome of their decisions. The labels would them be stuck on their body symbolizing the outer layer of who they are.
What was discovered through this project of identity is that some people do not know what words to associate themselves with. One reason could be that they could be filtering their thoughts since they know this photo will be viewed by many. Perhaps if their identity was kept anonymous other labels would have been selected. Some volunteers take the question more seriously then others. Also, another interesting observation I noticed is that one of the subjects had the same label as the father. One important element that this work captures is how a person acts when put on the spot and asked about themselves. I noticed some people weren’t honest with themselves when writing down their labels. Furthermore, very few subjects wrote any negative label at all which I find very interesting but at the same time not surprising. Finally, I have realized that the question asked is not an easy one. Identity is not something you can just put in words / labels and that is the message being addressed in this series.
